Top Furnace Repairs – Is Your Gas Furnace Not Heating?

While Furnaces are generally fairly simple to operate and maintain they are not fool-proof and must be serviced regularly to work properly and efficiently.  We recommend you have yours serviced at least once each year early in the heating season if possible but it is never too late.

Here’s the basics:  A Gas or Electric Furnace is hooked up to a thermostat inside the house that sends a signal to the furnace whenever the temperature drops below a certain level.  This tells the furnace to come on and if gas, then a burner ignites or if electric, then coils are heated.  The heat generated is then allowed to heat up air that is sucked into the furnace through a cold air duct, and dispersed again as warm air through the warm air ducts back into the home.

Since hot air rises, the best systems will have hot air ducts low in each room and in most northern parts of the country this is where you find them.   However, in North Texas, we spend more of our time cooling the air each year, so our ductwork is often placed high in each room because most of the time we are cooling instead of heating and cool air falls.  Because our heating ducts are high our heating systems are somewhat less effective.  To counter this, ceiling fans when set to the “winter” setting” instead of blowing cool air down on people, will pull up the cool air in the room and mix it with the warmer air at the top of the ceiling and force it out and down the walls back into the room.  So, often ceiling fans go hand-in-hand in effectively warming your home in the winter in North Texas;  when they are set to winter mode which is usually the UP position on little switch on the side of most ceiling fans.  If your ductwork is near the floor you probably will not benefit as much from using ceiling fans unless you have high pitched ceilings or some other home designs which may tend to trap the warm air.

Some gas furnaces will also have a humidifier mounted on the furnace or the return air ductwork to boost the moisture in the home which also helps to create a warmer atmosphere.  If the humidifier stops working your heating could also feel less effective.

TOP THREE FURNACE REPAIR PROBLEMS – GAS FURNACES

No. 1 Problem:  Gas Furnaces – No Heat

Probable Causes:

  • Natural gas or Propane Control valve is closed and no fuel is available for the furnace.
  • Pilot light is out or electronic ignition has failed.

Likely Repairs:

  •  Check the thermostat setting is on, has proper temperature, switched to Heat and working properly.
  • Reset a tripped circuit breaker or replace a blown fuse.
  • Relight the pilot light if it does not automatically relight already
  • If none of these work or you are uncomfortable trying these repairs yourself call Mike’s Air
